Kształcenie na kierunku Inżynieria Ciepła ma charakter interdyscyplinarny, oparty na podstawach chemii, fizyki, mechaniki, inżynierii materiałowej i ekonomii oraz zagadnieniami techniki cieplnej, m.in. wymiany ciepła, spalania, ruchu cieczy elastycznej, urządzeń cieplnych, modelowania matematycznego i symulacji numerycznych procesów transportu ciepła i masy, a także zagadnienia gospodarki energetycznej i efektywności energetycznej urządzeń cieplnych, czy też zagadnienia związane z odnawialnymi źródłami energii. Realizacja programu studiów pozwala przekazać absolwentom wiedzę z zakresu nadawania powierzchni wyrobów wysokiej odporności na wszelkiego rodzaju zużycie. Istnieje duże zapotrzebowanie rynku na specjalistów potrafiących wytwarzać i kontrolować wszelkiego rodzaju pokrycia. Program nauczania na tej specjalności, poza przedmiotami typowymi dla kierunków technicznych zawiera przedmioty, omawiające zjawiska zachodzące na powierzchni materiałów w czasie ich produkcji, uszlachetniania i eksploatacji. W szczególności obejmuje on procesy wytwarzania warstw powierzchniowych i powłok o innych, znacznie lepszych niż podłoża, własnościach głównie antykorozyjnych, antyzmęczeniowych, antyciernych, o szczególnych własnościach elektrycznych, magnetycznych, optycznych i dekoracyjnych, związane z tym zjawiska i uzyskiwane dzięki temu efekty eksploatacyjne. Znacząca część programu studiów obejmuje zakres zagadnień związanych z produkcją energii ze źródeł odnawialnych a także ekologiczne wytwarzanie energii w systemach klasycznych opartych o spalanie kopalnych paliw stałych i ciekłych. Znajomość tych problemów oraz umiejętność praktycznego wykorzystania nabytej w czasie studiów wiedzy stanowi podstawę badań naukowych i prac inżynierskich związanych z projektowaniem, budową i eksploatacją urządzeń i technologii w tym celu stosowanych. Zmierzają one do rozwiązań minimalizujących zużycie energii. Absolwent tej specjalności jest doskonale przygotowany do wykorzystania swojej wiedzy inżynieryjno-ekonomicznej we wszystkich gałęziach przemysłu, ze szczególnym ukierunkowaniem na energetykę i odnawialne źródła energii.
